Poetry as Revolution!

Robert Archambeau wrote that when the powerful control the means to silence the oppressed, “one can still take up a pen and write poems that say things unpalatable to the powers that be.”

Poetry offers a voice to the voiceless. It shakes things up. If you’ve ever written poetry as part of your personal revolution, if it’s been your scream in the night, your quiet resistance, your call to action — come and share with us.

Tomorrow night, March 28, at Java Jolt at 7pm. Open mic signup starts at 6:30. Come read your own poetry, your favorite piece, or one of the works of revolutionary poetry we’re bringing with us.

Poe and Poetry Packed the Jolt!

We were floored by the attendance and participation at Poe and Poetry last night! I don’t think we could have fit many more bodies in the house if we tried!

One of the goals of The Arts Collective Jacksonville is to foster creative community by providing opportunities to share creative work. That act of sharing takes guts, but it’s so worth it. When you read, perform, or exhibit, you are opening yourself up to creative growth. And you never know; you might be throwing a line to somebody — encouraging a budding artist, inspiring another poet, showing that girl over there in the corner that she isn’t alone in this mess, that there are other people out there who are willing to put themselves out there and say, “This matters.”

We had 13 writers share original poetry and fiction last night, and several more perform chilling, powerful readings of Poe and other poets’ works. That felt like creative community to me, y’all. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who helped, read, and listened. And a very special thank you to everyone at Java Jolt for hosting us.

The ACJ at the Cheaha Challenge!

Artists from The Arts Collective Jacksonville will be sharing a booth at the finish line of the Cheaha Challenge next weekend! We’ll be there selling cycling-related art and other works that showcase the natural beauty of our area. Here’s a little sneak peek. Come out to the JSU Coliseum Sunday May 15 to cheer on the finishers, enjoy food and music, and support local artists!

Poetry Scream 2016

Less screaming and more coffee as we moved inside Java Jolt (my home away from home) for this year’s National Poem in Your Pocket Day event. Enjoy a few of our pics below! Thanks to all who read, wrote, and listened, and apologies to those who hoped to read and weren’t able to. We’re wondering if we could do this every few months instead of annually … what do you think?
